What to check first.
- Sign it by hand. The IRS does not accept digital, electronic or typed signatures on a Form 2848 sent by fax or mail; a form signed electronically has to be submitted online.
- If you checked the box on line 4 (an authorization for a specific use), do not use the chart: fax or mail the form to the IRS office handling that matter.
- If you filed a joint return, each spouse signs their own Form 2848 to name a representative.
- Send every page of the form in one fax.
Other ways to file.
- Online at IRS.gov/Submit2848. You need an IRS Secure Access account, and this is the only way to send a form signed electronically.
- By mail, to the address in the same Where To File Chart.
After you fax it
- To revoke a power of attorney without naming a new representative, write "REVOKE" across the top of the first page, sign and date it again below that, and fax a copy to the number in the chart, or to the office handling the matter if it was for a specific use.
